Special Opportunities TRAVEL
HSGC students have traveled all over the world,
bringing their ideas about global citizenship to Costa Rica, Jamaica,
Panama, Colombia, Spain, France, Germany, The Czech Republic, Egypt,
Croatia, Kenya, Eritrea, Greece, Turkey and Italy. As a part of the
HSGC mission, students are encouraged to be travelers and explore the
world beyond our borders. Their exchanges abroad make HSGC a richer
community and make each student better equipped to be responsible
global citizens. Students return to HSGC and share their experiences
with the larger community through essays, poetry, pictures and
workshops.
9th, 10th and 11th grade students have the opportunity to take part in all travel programs through HSGC's partnerships with Heifer Ranch, The Experiment in International Living, YMCA Global Teens, Peace Boat and Global Kids' Human Rights Activist Project. View pictures of previous HSGC student trips at www.flickr.com/photos/hsgc.
The HSGC community works diligently to make these opportunities available to all interested students, irrespective of a family's economic situation. All programs that partner with HSGC offer considerable scholarships. HSGC families, staff and students fundraise to close the gap between scholarship funds and actual trip costs. If you are interested in donating to HSGC travel programs for youth, visit our fundraising page at www.firstgiving.org/hsgctravel. Careers in Focus - Career Exploration Program As a part of the HSGC core curriculum, 12th graders are encouraged to further their knowledge of local and global issues as well as their own personal interests by taking part in semester long career readiness activities. The Careers in Focus program is made up of experiences such as career days, professional panels and internships which serve to not only give students first hand knowledge of issues of concern to them, but will enable them to gain important professional experience and prepare them for the work world. Staff from the New York Law Department, the Department of Education, Alcoa and the Swedish Mission to the US have participated in HSGC Career Panels. In addition, students have partcipated in internships at Bank Robber Music, the International Rescue Committee, Sun in Leo Marketing, Proskauer and Rose Architects, The Hague Appeal for Peace, Senator Eric Adams' Office, International Creative Management, Plum Pictures, New York City Media Group and PAX USA. If you are interested in participating in the Careers in Focus Program -- hosting a student in an internship at your organization, speaking on a panel or particiapting in a job shadowing day-- please contact Youth Development Specialist, Tene Howard at tene@globalkids.org or 718-230-6300 x3054. |
